Radisson Hotel Group Champions Sustainability with Innovative Closed-Loop Recycling System for Hotel Amenities Across India, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates

Radisson Hotel Group is making notable progress in sustainability by implementing an innovative closed-loop recycling system for hotel bulk liquid amenities in key markets such as India, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. This initiative is a key part of the company’s larger sustainability strategy, which aims to reduce single-use plastic waste, promote a circular economy, and deliver sustainable guest experiences. The hotel group is fully committed to decreasing its environmental footprint while continuing to offer high-quality service to guests.

Central to this closed-loop system is the collection of used bulk amenity bottles, which are carefully processed for recycling. The leftover liquids are removed and recycled, and the packaging is repurposed to support sustainability efforts. By implementing this approach, Radisson Hotel Group not only minimizes plastic waste but also supports a more efficient and environmentally responsible supply chain. In India, for example, the company has partnered with a network of 11 recycling partners across the country who collect used amenity bottles from hotels. These materials are carefully sorted, cleaned, and recycled into raw materials, which are then used to create new products. The entire process is carefully documented and tracked through audits and periodic reports, guaranteeing complete traceability of the closed-loop system.

In addition to this initiative, Radisson Hotel Group is actively addressing the issue of plastic waste by replacing single-use bathroom amenities with bulk dispensers. So far, 91% of the company’s hotels have transitioned to soap dispensers in public washrooms, and Radisson aims to achieve full implementation of reusable soap dispensers across its entire portfolio by the end of 2025. This move is expected to eliminate approximately 57 million mini amenity bottles annually, significantly reducing the amount of plastic used and cutting down on waste by nearly 500 tons. The roll-out of these dispensers is an essential part of Radisson’s commitment to Hotel Sustainability Basics, an initiative designed to promote sustainability within the hospitality industry.

Beyond liquid amenities, Radisson Hotel Group has also taken steps to eliminate single-use plastic from all dry bathroom amenities by replacing them with environmentally responsible alternatives. The company has introduced packaging made from stone paper, a durable material crafted from calcium carbonate combined with high-density polyethylene resin. This innovative material reduces plastic usage, while the printing on the packaging uses soy-based ink, which is a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional inks. Additionally, the packaging itself is made from FSC-certified cardboard, sourced from responsibly managed forests or recycled materials.

The dry amenities, such as toothbrushes and combs, are now made from PSM (Plant-Starch Material) that combines plant-based starch, such as corn and potatoes, with plastic fillers like polypropylene. This shift is in line with Radisson’s ongoing efforts to reduce its environmental footprint, all while maintaining the high standard of amenities and service that guests expect. The introduction of these sustainable bathroom products marks a major step forward in Radisson Hotel Group’s long-standing dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

The broader context of these initiatives is tied to the growing demand for sustainable travel options. According to a recent survey, 75% of global travelers are increasingly seeking more sustainable travel choices, and 43% believe that travel providers hold the responsibility for reducing the environmental impact of the tourism industry. Radisson Hotel Group has responded to these concerns by not only implementing these sustainability measures but also by encouraging guests to make more responsible travel decisions. The company offers Sustainable Stays through Hotel Sustainability Basics, which certifies hotels that meet a set of environmentally responsible criteria. Additionally, the company promotes eco-labels and other certifications to ensure guests can easily identify sustainable travel options when booking their stays.

Through its commitment to responsible business practices, Radisson Hotel Group is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable hospitality. The closed-loop recycling initiative, the shift to bulk amenity dispensers, and the move toward plastic-free alternatives in bathroom amenities are just a few examples of how the company is taking proactive steps to address the environmental challenges facing the industry. These efforts not only contribute to a more sustainable supply chain but also demonstrate Radisson’s commitment to offering guests eco-friendly accommodations that align with their values.

The company’s approach is a testament to the growing importance of sustainability in the travel and hospitality industry. As more travelers demand eco-conscious options, Radisson Hotel Group is setting the standard for how the industry can reduce its environmental impact while maintaining the high levels of service and comfort that guests expect. The ongoing success of these initiatives will be crucial in shaping the future of sustainable tourism and hospitality, as well as in helping to mitigate the environmental impact of the global travel sector. By working together with partners and guests, Radisson Hotel Group is ensuring that sustainability remains at the forefront of its operations and that future generations can continue to enjoy the beauty of the world in an environmentally responsible way.
